Summer Is Here… and So Is Yearbook Planning!

The sun is out, the snacks are cold, and the school year is officially in the rearview mirror. But before you kick back completely, it's the perfect time to do a little yearbook planning while this year's experience is still fresh in your mind.

Don't worry—this doesn't have to take up your whole summer. A little thoughtful prep now can save you loads of time (and stress) later. Here are some key ways to get a head start on next year's yearbook season:

Think Themes

It's never too early to start brainstorming! Keep a running list of theme ideas you've seen or loved. Snap a photo, save a Pinterest pin, or jot it in your Notes app. Future you will be glad you did! Click here to see the latest yearbook themes

Take Good Notes

Now's the time to reflect:

  • What worked well this year?

  • What challenges came up?

  • Who were your go-to helpers for specific parts of the book?

Documenting these things now helps you build on success (and avoid repeat headaches).

Don't Miss Summer Moments

If your school has summer sports, camps, or club events, make a plan now to gather those photos. A few great summer shots can add variety and excitement to your yearbook content.

Review the Yearbook Size

Looking through your final book and thinking, "I wish I had more space for that event…"?

Now is the perfect time to evaluate your page count. Write down what changes you'd make and why—this makes it easier to advocate for budget changes or layout adjustments next year. Check out all of our yearbook cover bindings here.

Pass the Baton Smoothly

If you're handing the yearbook over to a new adviser, set them up for success:

  • Share your notes and reflections

  • Provide contact info for your yearbook rep

  • Let them know about any critical timelines or logins

A little guidance can go a long way!

Level Up at a Yearbook Conference

Summer is also a great time to grow your skills! Look for yearbook conferences, webinars, or workshops. Whether it's photography tips, layout tricks, or theme development, these events are full of inspiration. Join our free ECS Virtual Yearbook Conference on July 21 and 22. Click here to learn more.
